There may be times when you want to give someone FTP access — like a developer or designer — without sharing your main cPanel login. That’s where additional FTP accounts come in handy.
Here’s how to create and manage FTP accounts directly from your cPanel.
Why Create Additional FTP Accounts?
- Give access to specific folders only.
- Limit access for temporary users (e.g., developers).
- Protect sensitive data (e.g., emails, backups, config files).
How to Create an FTP Account
Step 1: Log in to cPanel
Use your domain.com/cpanel or log in via the client area.
Step 2: Open FTP Accounts
In the Files section, click FTP Accounts.
Step 3: Fill in the Account Details
Under Add FTP Account, complete the following:
Login:
Enter a username. It will be formatted as username@yourdomain.com.
Password:
Enter a strong password and confirm it.
Strength:
This shows how secure your password is. Aim for Very Strong.
Directory:
Set the folder this FTP user can access:
- For full access, use: /
- For web files only, use: public_html
- To restrict access to a subfolder (e.g., images), use: public_html/images
Quota:
Set the maximum disk space for this FTP user or choose Unlimited.
Step 4: Click “Create FTP Account”
You’ll see a confirmation message: Account Created
Best Practices
- Don’t give full access unless necessary.
- Use unique usernames for each person.
- Restrict access to specific directories when possible.
Tip: To view or remove an FTP user later, scroll down on the same FTP Accounts page.
