What is an IPS Tag? Print

  • 0

An IPS Tag (also known as an Internet Provider Security Tag) is a label used in the UK domain name system, specifically for .uk domain names, to identify the registrar responsible for managing that domain.

Key Points:

  • IPS Tags are unique identifiers assigned to Nominet-accredited registrars.
  • They are required when you transfer a .uk domain from one registrar to another.
  • The current registrar must change the IPS Tag to the new registrar’s tag to complete the transfer.
  • The term "IPS Tag" is historical; it now may simply be referred to as a “TAG” by Nominet (the official registry for .uk domains).

Example:

If you're moving your .co.uk domain from Registrar A to Registrar B, Registrar A must update the IPS Tag to match Registrar B’s tag.

Without updating the IPS Tag, the domain cannot be transferred.

Why is it Important?

The IPS Tag helps maintain security and control during domain transfers, ensuring that only authorized registrars can manage specific domain names.
